# Stop tracking someone

> Turn tracking off for one person without uninstalling anything, and know exactly what that stops.

The usual reason is somebody moving into a role that should not be tracked, most often a senior manager. Uninstalling is the wrong tool for that: it means a helpdesk visit now, and another one if it ever needs reversing.

## How

**Workforce**, edit the person, untick **Enable Tracking**, save.

That is the whole change. The client picks it up the next time it signs in, which happens when the machine or the client next starts.

## What it stops

The client keeps running, but it creates **no cloud activity at all**. Nothing is recorded and held back, and nothing accumulates locally waiting to be sent later. There is simply nothing to send.

| Still happens | Stops |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- |
| The client runs and signs in | Any application, website or window title being uploaded |
| The person appears on the Versions page with a version and a last seen date | Any new rows on Statistics, Activity or an export |
| Blocking plans still apply, if you use them | |

<Info>They remain visible on the **Versions** page because that reads sign-ins, not activity. That is useful: you can still confirm their client is healthy and up to date without recording what they do.</Info>

## What it does not do

* It does not delete activity already recorded. Their history stays and remains visible for past date ranges.
* It does not remove the account or free a seat.
* It does not hide them from the Workforce list.

## Reversing it

Tick **Enable Tracking** again. Recording resumes from the next sign-in. Nothing from the untracked period is backfilled, and there will be a visible gap in that person's history, which is correct.

## When to uninstall instead

Uninstall when the software should not be on the machine at all, for example a machine leaving the organisation or being repurposed. For everything else, the tracking switch is faster, reversible, and does not need anyone to touch the machine. See [Uninstall](/uninstall).
